Mixed Use Housing
EXISTING SITE ANALYSIS
Teach for America Housing & Thompson Boat House Crew
Located on the banks of the Potomac River in Georgetown Washington D.C. - this project aimed at bridging the gap between a private residence for Teach for America Teachers and a public boat house entity (The Thompson Boat House Center). The site, "Mole", located at lock “0” of the C&O Canal was selected for its proximity between Georgetown and Foggy Bottom, and it's views of Washington D.C and Virginia.
The goal of the project was to maintain the Thompson Boat House center program, while simultaneously providing a space for Teach for America Teachers to reside. The mass of the building extends over the site East-West, gaining the maximum possible exposure on the Southern facade. The geometry articulates itself as the program ascends upwards from the pedestrian level on the ground plane to the residences above. The formal language of the architecture is celebrated on the ground plane, from the water, and from within the residences.
The main housing element, supported by articulated columns, hovers of the site and the river, and the Thompson Boat House Center - allowing uninterrupted views up and down the Potomac river. Communal indoor and communal outdoor spaces for the teachers flank the east and west ends of the floor plates. Materials of cast in place concrete, weathered ash wood, and glass maintain a strict palette throughout the project.
