Undergraduate Architecture Thesis
SITE & BUILDING SECTION
An architecture of reciprocity.
Reciprocity is commonly understood as an act of mutual exchange and dependence. This thesis is a response to the reciprocal nature of an architectural form and program - investigating the relationship between the process of wine making and the architectural form of a winery. A hierarchy of spaces is orchestrated in conjunction with five distinct processes of wine making: crushing and destemming, fermentation, barrel storage, bottle storage, and tasting. The reciprocal nature of form and the process of wine making is further augmented by qualities of time and light. The longer the process, for example, the darker and taller the volume of space. Four factors facilitate an understanding between the architectural form and the process of wine making: the site, the presence, the gathering, and the encounter.
Site: Located in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, a former agricultural site in Lovettsville Virginia provided the necessary tools for the ideas of reciprocity. As an object in the landscape, volumes of space extend themselves from below ground to express an architectural form.
Presence: The architectural form establishes a hierarchical relationship between the landscape and the built environment, enhanced by the height of the five towers of the process of wine making. Five volumes of space hint at the reciprocal nature between wine making and architecture.
Gathering: Inhabitants of the space recognize the process and respond to the architectural form. Past and present are artfully crafted with elements anchored by views and that penetrate through the building or through the site.
Encounter: As inhabitants of the architecture find themselves responding to the five processes at hand, a unique quality of light and space is presented. Material shifts further express the formal qualities of the architecture by giving each process a different quality of light. A response back to the site, the originator of the process and the form, is encountered in a threefold manor: underground, on the ground plane, and above the ground plane.
